Despite sanctions restrictions, Russia was able to significantly increase the production of missiles, tanks and other weapons, The New York Times reports, citing American, European and Ukrainian officials.
After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the United States made limiting the supply of dual-use products to Russia a key part of its strategy to support Kiev, as a result of which Moscow “was forced to slow down missile production for six months.” But by the end of last year, military-industrial production began to gain momentum again, the newspaper writes.
According to a high-ranking Western military official, if before the special operation Russia could produce 100 tanks a year, now production has increased to 200. The Russian army stores some types of missiles, including the X-55 cruise missiles, more than it had at the beginning of the special operation. interlocutors familiar with the intelligence reports told the publication.
Chancellor of the Estonian Ministry of Defense Kusti Salm noted that the current production of ammunition in Russia is seven times greater than in the West. “The cost of production in Russia is much lower <...>. For example, the production of a 155-mm projectile costs Western countries $5-6 thousand. In Russia, the production of a 152-mm projectile costs about $600,” he told The New York Times.
The publication notes that Russia bypassed US EXPORT controls by using intelligence services “to organize illegal networks that smuggle key components.” As a result, Russian factories receive microcircuits and spare parts necessary for military equipment through third countries.
At the end of last year, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that enterprises of the military-industrial complex had to be “stirred up” and transferred to a military footing in order for them to work effectively in the conditions of a military operation. He also noted that the country is increasing the production of the most powerful weapons.
