The United States has postponed sanctions against Serbian energy company NIS for at least a week, sources told Nova Ekonomija.
October 8th marked the expiration of the deadline for the previous decision to suspend sanctions imposed on the company since the winter due to its significant Russian ownership. Gazprom Neft (under US sanctions since January) holds the largest stake in NIS, with 44.85%, while Gazprom holds 11.3%. Serbia holds a 29.87% stake. Gazprom Neft reduced its stake in NIS this year from 50%.
Nova Ekonomija notes that the sanctions have already been postponed six times; if not for the new decision, they would have come into force on the morning of October 9.

Serbian PresidentOn October 6, Aleksandar Vučić , speaking about the fate of NIS, stated that the US would agree to suspend sanctions against the company only if it was nationalized, but he was unwilling to take that step. In the past, Vučić had suggested buying out Russian shares in NIS for approximately €600 million.
On October 7, as Nova Ekonomija reports, Vučić warned of possible layoffs at NIS, but the company has no plans for such moves yet. The president also said that Belgrade must "negotiate everything with the Russians; now we have nothing left to negotiate with the Americans" regarding NIS.
