Norway missed two containers with cargo for residents of the Russian village of Barentsburg on the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, NRK TV channel reports, citing the Norwegian Foreign Ministry.

“Two containers of supplies for Barentsburg are now on their way on a Norwegian ship,” the agency said.

The ship is heading from Norwegian Tromsø to Longyearbyen, a Norwegian village on the island, which is the administrative center of the archipelago. There is no road from it to Barentsburg, so cargo can be delivered there either by water or by air.

The Foreign Ministry said that Norway had no intention of cutting off supplies to Svalbard and Barentsburg. Due to sanctions (in early April, the EU banned Russian and Belarusian trucks from entering its territory), cars with goods from RUSSIA could not arrive in Norway, then they were delivered to Tromsø by a Norwegian carrier, the Foreign Ministry said. They added that such a solution to the problem was agreed with the Russian side.

The Consulate General of Russia in Svalbard, which is located in Barentsburg, confirmed to RIA Novosti that now the cargo for the Russian settlement on the archipelago will be delivered to the port by a Norwegian carrier. At the same time, two new containers were sent to Svalbard, and not those that were previously “stuck” on the border of the two countries. Cargo, according to the consulate, will arrive in the village on July 8.

Norway refused to allow Russian cargo with 20 tons of food to Svalbard at the end of June. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry reported that they had rejected the corresponding request from the Russian embassy on behalf of the Arktikugol trust - this company owns mines in Svalbard, Russian shift workers work there.

Previously, cargo was sent every ten days from Murmansk by truck through the Storskog checkpoint on the border between Russia and Norway, from where the cargo went to Tromsø, and on the ship Bring to Barentsburg. The import of goods was regulated by the Paris Treaty of 1920, according to which all countries that signed the document, including Russia , can deliver goods to the Norwegian island .

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the situation with the delivery of goods to the archipelago unacceptable and demanded that Oslo resolve this issue as soon as possible, otherwise promising "inevitably" to take retaliatory measures.

The problem was also discussed in the State Duma: Communist Party deputy Mikhail Matveev proposed to denounce the agreement with Norway on the delimitation of maritime spaces and cooperation in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean, signed in 2010. Parliament Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin supported the idea and instructed the Committee on International Affairs to consider it.

However, the Kremlin said that they had not yet developed an official position on the issue of denunciation of this treaty. In Norway, they noted that this document “does not contain a termination clause” and this type of agreement is valid indefinitely. But the Federation Council indicated that Russia's withdrawal is still possible in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties and other domestic and international documents.
