Europe will need to restore relations with RUSSIA after the fighting in Ukraine ends , Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez told El Diario after a visit to Kiev in late January.

"We all realise that when peace comes, Europe will still have a very long border with Russia and we must restore relations," the diplomat said.

Relations between the parties should be built on the basis of “sovereign equality, mutual respect, and respect for the European project,” the HEAD of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.

At the same time, Albarez emphasized that “all Europeans have a very clear idea of what relations with Putin should be like” against the backdrop of military actions in Ukraine.

"We are living through a moment very similar to the one that happened when the Berlin Wall fell. We are not facing a paradigm shift, but we are facing a moment when we have to decide where we are going to go in the coming decades," the minister added.

The head of the Spanish Foreign Ministry noted that the purpose of his visit to Ukraine, which took place on January 28, was to express support for Kyiv. Madrid allocated €10 million in additional humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Moscow has always condemned Western arms supplies to Ukraine. The Kremlin has repeatedly stated that they will not change the course of the military operation, but will only prolong the conflict.
