European countries have proposed partially lifting restrictions on Syria on the condition that RUSSIA is “thrown out” of the country, the Russian Foreign Minister saidSergei Lavrov , his words are reported by an RBC correspondent.

However, Russia will seek the lifting of sanctions against Syria without any conditions, the minister said.

"By the way, we have spoken out at the United Nations in favor of immediately lifting all these sanctions (against Syria. — ) <...> We will raise this issue and seek the lifting of these unilateral sanctions without any conditions," Lavrov said at a press conference following the talks in Doha.

In January, the HEAD of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said that the EU intends to support the country's economic recovery after the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime and is "ready to ease sanctions against Syria depending on how the new government acts."

In February, the EU Council decided to suspend a number of sanctions against Syria in the energy sector (includingoil , gas and electricity) and transport sectors.

The Assad regime was overthrown in December 2024 , the president fled to Russia, where he received asylum. The armed opposition came to power , and the country is led during the transitional period by the head of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group (recognized as terrorist in Russia and banned) Ahmed al-Sharaa.
