The US Senate published the draft of a new package of sanctions because of Ukraine the day before, on January 12. Russian President Vladimir Putin , Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu may be subject to restrictions . Restrictions are proposed to be imposed in the event of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, they may affect at least three Russian banks from the list, which includes Sberbank, VTB, Gazprombank and others.

The Kremlin assessed reports of the threat of sanctions negatively. Such statements do not contribute to the dialogue, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian President. According to Peskov, the appearance of such statements is an attempt to put pressure on Moscow, but it is pointless.
