The Kremlin explained why it expected Trump to extend sanctions

RUSSIA and the United States are "at the beginning of our journey" to normalize relations and are essentially building them anew. Therefore, "it would be hard to expect another decision, especially since these are fairly automatic actions," said Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov , commenting on US President Donald Trump's extension of the state of emergency for a year in connection with the "harmful activities" of the Russian authorities.

“Therefore, we did not have any inflated expectations on this matter,” Peskov said ( quoted by Interfax).

On April 12, Trump extended the state of emergency for a year in connection with the “malign activities” of the Russian authorities. The document, published in the US Federal Register, indicates the need to continue sanctions pressure on Russia. The extension of the state of emergency includes the blocking of Russian assets and sanctions against specific Russian organizations and individuals. In addition, secondary sanctions are being introduced against foreign financial institutions cooperating with the Russian military-industrial complex.

During the election campaign, Trump said he disliked sanctions and wanted to use them less. In March,  REUTERS reported that the US presidential administration was developing a plan to ease restrictions against Russia. The list, as the agency wrote, was being prepared for subsequent discussion at talks with Moscow on improving relations between the countries.

The Kremlin has repeatedly noted that "reviving relations" with the US requires great efforts from both sides. Peskov said that contacts between Moscow and Washington are carried out through special services and foreign ministries.

The last meeting of the Russian and American delegations took place on April 10 in Istanbul. The State Department reported that the parties exchanged notes that will ensure the stability of banking services for their diplomatic missions. According to the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow and Washington agreed to develop a "road map" for the return of Russian diplomatic facilities confiscated by the American authorities.
