EU countries intend to lift sanctions against Syria, EU Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas said upon arrival at a meeting of EU Foreign and Defense Ministers, Leaders MENA reports on the X social network.

"I hope that the EU countries will come to an agreement to lift sanctions on Syria today," Kallas said.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump promised to lift sanctions against Syria and give it another chance at a business forum in Saudi Arabia on May 13. American sanctions "were tough and paralyzing," but they fulfilled an important function, he is sure.

The Times reported the day before that the Syrian government is ready to make a number of concessions in order to lift the American sanctions imposed during the presidency of Bashar al-Assad. Thus, Damascus may offer Trump an agreement on access for American companies to develop natural resources in Syria, similar to the Ukrainian deal.
