State Department Says Sanctions Against Russia Are Not Planned as Permanent Sanctions

The United States can lift many sanctions against RUSSIA in the event of the termination of the military special operation in Ukraine, as well as the restoration of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of this country, a representative of the US State Department said at a briefing.

She was asked what are the conditions for lifting the restrictions imposed on Moscow. A spokesperson for the agency responded that sanctions are a “tool” and are “not meant to be permanent.”

“And if we see the results that we are trying to achieve in terms of stopping Russian aggression, restoring the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, then, we hope, many of the tools that we use <...> will cease to be used,” she said (quoted by RIA Novosti).

The United States has imposed several packages of sanctions after Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine. Sberbank, VTB and a number of other Russian banks fell under the restrictions. Washington also tightened restrictions on the EXPORT of microelectronics to Russia, banned transactions with the Central Bank, the FNB and the Ministry of Finance, imposed an embargo on Russian oil and banned the export of luxury goods to the country.
