Gerhard Schroeder and Matthias Warnig will leave the board of directors of Rosneft, according to the company's website. They served as chairman and deputy chairman of the council, respectively.

Rosneft informs that Messrs. Gerhard Schroeder and Matthias Warnig have reported that it is impossible to extend their powers on the company's board of directors. <...> We are sympathetic to their decision and thank you for your unwavering support,” the statement said.

The European Parliament voted for the imposition of sanctions against Schroeder and Kneisl Politics

Schroeder was Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005. He has been the HEAD of the Board of Directors of Rosneft since 2017. He is also Chairman of the Shareholders' Committee of Nord Stream AG, operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. In addition, in early February, Schroeder was nominated to the board of directors of Gazprom instead of the son-in-law of the former president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, Timur Kulibayev.

Warnig has been with the Stasi since the 1970s. As WSJ and Focus reported, in Dresden he met Vladimir Putin, who was then working in the KGB residency in the GDR. In the 1990s, Warnig began his career in business, holding senior positions at Dresdner Bank. Later he became a member of the board of directors of a number of Russian companies, including Rosneft, Transneft and Rusal. Warnig is also the Executive DIRECTOR of Nord Stream 2 AG.

As of March 1, Schroeder had no shares in Rosneft, and Warnig owned 92,633 shares, or 0.0009% of the authorized capital.

The decision of Schroeder and Warnig to leave the board of directors of Rosneft became known after the European Parliament proposed imposing sanctions against European board members of large Russian companies and politicians who continue to receive money from RUSSIA. In particular, the deputies mentioned Schroeder, who, against the background of the events in Ukraine, was already offered by the current German chancellor to leave his posts in Russian state-owned companies. For ties with Russia, the Bundestag deprived Schroeder of part of the privileges, abolishing his office, which was funded by the state.

In addition, the former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, who has also been on the board of directors of Rosneft since June last year, may also be subject to restrictions, the European Parliament warned.
