The permanent representatives of the EU countries in Brussels agreed on a new package of sanctions due to Russia's special operation in Ukraine. This is stated on Twitter of the country chairing the Council of the European Union - France.
In a series of messages on behalf of the French delegation, it is said that the new measures "clarify the issue of cryptocurrencies and complete the list of technologies and goods that cannot be exported." “Sanctions targeting the maritime sector have also been approved,” one report says.
In addition, the permanent representatives approved "new sanctions against Russian officials, oligarchs and members of their families." Three Belarusian banks will also be disconnected from the SWIFT system.
The measures developed will be signed by the EU Council and will enter into force after publication in the official journal of the Council.
The Presidency of the Council of the EU is responsible for organizing meetings, developing joint decisions, presenting opinions and ensuring coherence and consistency in the decision-making process. Also, the President of the EU Council ensures the interaction of the Council with European institutions, in particular with the European Commission and the European Parliament. The French presidency of this body began on 1 January and will last for six months.
