Finnish customs considerthat imported drilling equipment can also be used "for non-civilian purposes"

Drilling equipment worth about €2.2 million could have been imported to RUSSIA through Finland, Helsingin Sanomat reports with reference to Finnish customs.

The European Union restricted the EXPORT of such equipment to Russia in 2014. According to customs, this technique has a wide application - from building bridges to drilling oil wells, including underwater ones, but can also be used for military purposes.

“This equipment can also be used for non-civilian purposes. This is not some kind of hand drill, but more massive equipment, ”said Finnish customs spokesman Hannu Sinkkonen.

According to a preliminary investigation, Finnish and Estonian companies ordered drilling equipment from CANADA. From Finland, this equipment was then sold to a Russian company.

According to investigators, all three companies were linked. “We believe that the three-company scheme was created only for the purpose of circumventing the sanctions,” Sinkkonen said. There are four people on the list of suspects, all of them have dual citizenship - Russia and Finland.

In total, in 2020-2022, almost 50 batches of drilling equipment worth about €2.2 million were imported into Russia through Finland, customs officials believe.
