EU ministers will discuss a way to confiscate the assets of Russian oligarchs in the EU on the basis of criminal charges for circumventing sanctions. This was announced by European Commissioner for Justice and Rule of Law Didier Reynders upon arrival at a meeting of the EU Council at the level of ministers of the interior. A video of Reynders' statement was posted on the European Council website.

“The main topic will again be Ukraine. I will update ministers on progress on sanctions, where we have new developments, based on potential laws to criminalize sanctions circumvention. On this basis [it will be possible] to receive COURT sentences and confiscate the assets of individuals and companies,” he said.

The Council of the EU at the end of November unanimously approved the inclusion in the list of criminal offenses bypassing sanctions. The next step is for the European Commission to develop a directive that will describe the crimes associated with the circumvention of sanctions and the penalties for them. Then it will be discussed by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.
