EU to ban Belavia from leasing aircraft under new package of sanctions

The Belarusian air carrier will not be able to enter into new leasing contracts with European companies, and will also have to return the planes according to the old ones.This will deprive the company of more than half of the fleet

EU sanctions against Belarus include the termination of leasing contracts with the state-owned airline Belavia , Irish Foreign and Defense Minister Simon Covney said.

“The contracts under which the aircraft were leased to Belavia will, in fact, be terminated,” the diplomat said (quoted by REUTERS). According to Kovni, Belarus will be obliged to return these aircraft, otherwise a trial will be held.

In total, there are 29 aircraft in the Belavia fleet. 17 of them were leased by Belavia through Irish companies, Kovney said.

The European Union has agreed on the fifth package of sanctions against Belarus, it will be introduced in the coming days, said the HEAD of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell. The restrictions will be a response to the aggravation of the migration crisis on the border of Poland and Belarus.
