The EU has created a mechanism that will allow the imposition of sanctions against persons responsible for undermining or threatening the sovereignty and independence of Moldova, according to the website of the Council of the European Union.
“We see more frequent and ongoing attempts to destabilize the situation in Moldova. The new sanctions regime will give us the opportunity to continue building Moldova's resilience by targeting those who are trying to destabilize the country. This is an important political signal of EU support for Moldova in the current difficult conditions,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
Brussels will be able to impose restrictions, for example, against persons who "obstruct or undermine the democratic political process, including the holding of elections, or attempt to overthrow the constitutional order, including through acts of violence." Future restrictive measures may also be directed against crimes against public funds and the illegal EXPORT of capital, "to the extent possible."
The sanctions will include an asset freeze as well as a ban on entry into the EU.
In the summer of 2022, Brussels granted Moldova the status of an EU candidate country, along with Ukraine. This week, the European Union announced the creation of a civilian mission to "improve the stability of the country's security sector, including cybersecurity, and counter information manipulation." The mission will receive a two-year mandate, its headquarters will be located in the republic.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in turn, doubted that the presence of the mission in the country would help stabilize the situation “given the radically changed nature of the EU, which has transformed into a geopolitical instrument of the United States and NATO, taking open confrontational actions against RUSSIA . ”

The so-called opposition wants to change the government in Chisinau,” she said. Sandu called the goal "the overthrow of the constitutional order" and the transfer of the republic "at the disposal of Russia." Zakharova then denied that Russia had a plan to destabilize the situation in Moldova, calling such allegations "absolutely unfounded and unsubstantiated." “Obviously, the true goal of Kyiv, which launched disinformation about the “Russian plan to destabilize Moldova,” is to draw Chisinau into a tough confrontation with Russia,” she argued.
