The EU Committee of Permanent Representatives agreed on new sanctions against Belarus. This is stated on Twitter of the country chairing the Council of the European Union - France.
The sanctions will affect Belarusian officials and the military "involved in Russian aggression against Ukraine", as well as certain sectors of the Belarusian economy, in particular the timber, steel and potassium industries. “These measures will be published in the Official Journal of the EU for entry into force,” the statement said.
The Presidency of the Council of the EU is in charge of organizing meetings, developing compromise solutions, presenting conclusions and ensuring coherence and consistency in the decision-making process. Also, the President of the EU Council ensures the interaction of the Council with European institutions, in particular with the European Commission and the European Parliament. The French presidency of this body began on 1 January and will last for six months.
Potash fertilizers are one of the main export goods of Belarus. Belarus is already subject to EU sectoral sanctions related to potash production. They were introduced in June 2021 due to human rights violations and the forced landing of a Ryanair plane in MINSK.
