The Joe Biden administration is considering several options for imposing sanctions against Russia and Russian individuals in connection with the aggravation of the situation around Ukraine, sources told CNN.

According to the channel, members of "Putin's inner circle", Russian energy companies and banks may be subject to restrictions. New sanctions could also be applied to Russia's sovereign debt. In the most radical, "nuclear", as CNN calls it, option, Russia can be disconnected from the SWIFT interbank system.

Sanctions against individuals close to Putin, whom the channel calls "leading Russian oligarchs," could include entry restrictions and a ban on the use of the US banking system.

The objectives of these sanctions are “to keep Russian President Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine,” the channel’s interlocutors say.

“We have a damn aggressive package of sanctions,” a US administration source told CNN . According to him, if Russia does invade Ukraine, then it will be followed by the most severe economic sanctions ever imposed, which can only be compared with sanctions against Iran and North Korea.
