The US Department of Energy is seeking congressional approval of a plan to buy enriched uranium directly from US producers in order to reduce imports from RUSSIA, BLOOMBERG writes, citing a source. According to him, it is proposed to allocate $4.3 billion for these purposes, but this cannot be done without the approval of the parliament.
Representatives of the department held a meeting with legislators, at which they explained the need for such a step. They explained that any disruption in the supply of fuel for nuclear reactors would lead to disruption of the latter. Another interlocutor of the agency said that the problem was also discussed with representatives of the industry.
The proposal, according to him, is to increase the volume of uranium enrichment and the production of finished fuel within the country.
According to the agency, there is only one uranium enrichment facility in the United States now. It is located in New Mexico and belongs to the European company Urenco.
The Global X Uranium ETF index rose 7.4% after the Bloomberg report, as did shares of some uranium producers.
