Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who proposed a draft of new anti-Russian sanctions with 500% duties for those who buy energy from Moscow, called on Russia to take steps to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and threatened to put the restrictions into effect otherwise. His message is published by The Wall Street Journal.

President Donald Trump is seeking to restore the United States' reputation and end the conflict, Graham said . Ukraine has "made it clear" that it is ready to act, and "Russia is making more excuses than the world can bear," the senator said.

"I have been coordinating with the White House on the Russia sanctions bill from the very beginning. This bill would isolate Russia in trade by imposing a 500% tariff on any country that buys Russian energy. <...> If CHINA or India stop buying cheap"Oil , Putin's war machine will stop," he said.

Graham emphasized that the sanctions bill has the support of 82 co-sponsors (there are 100 members in the Senate). The senator added that he hopes for the best, but at the same time understands that nothing may change. "If Putin continues to play games, the Senate will act," Graham added.

Trump had criticized Putin the day before and said that he was "absolutely" considering sanctions against Russia. He explained his dissatisfaction with Putin by saying that the HEAD of state had "completely lost his mind." "He's killing a lot of people unnecessarily, and I'm not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being launched into cities in Ukraine for no reason. I've always said he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just part of it, and maybe that's true, but if he gets it, it will lead to the fall of Russia!" Trump said. He also spoke negatively about Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the Republican, every word the Ukrainian president says "creates problems" for his country and Trump would like it to "stop."

Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov, in response to the American leader's comments, thanked the United States for its mediation efforts. "We are grateful to the Americans and personally to President Trump for their assistance in organizing and launching the negotiation process," Peskov said. "This is a very important moment, which is associated with the emotional overload of absolutely everyone and with emotional reactions. We are closely monitoring all reactions," Peskov said.

The Kremlin has called the strikes on Ukraine in recent days a response to attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Moscow has repeatedly called sanctions against Russia illegal and called for them to be lifted as part of the conflict settlement.
