Australia has imposed sanctions on Russians whom Canberra considers involved in the poisoning of opposition leader Vladimir Kara-Murza (recognized as a foreign agent) in 2015 and 2017 and his criminal prosecution.
According to Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, financial restrictions and a travel ban apply to three “FSB agents” and ten other people. According to the list on the Cabinet website, these are:
FSB officers Konstantin Kudryavtsev, Alexander Samofal and Valery Sukharev; Deputy Minister of Justice Oleg Sviridenko; First Deputy Chairman of the Investigative Committee Eduard Kaburneev; Deputy Chairmen of the Investigative Committee Sergei Goryainov and Elena Leonenko; Deputy HEAD of the Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee Denis Kolesnikov; investigator for particularly important cases Andrey Zadachin; Judge of the Basmanny Court Elena Lenskaya; judges of the Moscow City Court Vitaly Belitsky and Ekaterina Dorokhina; Prosecutor Boris Loktionov.Prior to this, sanctions in connection with the Kara-Murza case were imposed by Great Britain , the European Union, CANADA and the United States .
On April 17, Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was found guilty of treason, operating an undesirable organization and spreading fake news about the Russian army. The oppositionist did not admit guilt and called the criminal case politically motivated. In his last word, he said that “this is now the price for silence in RUSSIA.” The defense appealed the verdict, but the first appellate court upheld the Moscow City Court's decision. At the end of September, the oppositionist was transferred from the Vodnik pre-trial detention center to IK-6 in the Omsk region.
Kara-Murza has been in pre-trial detention center since April 2022. The defense reported that during his imprisonment the oppositionist’s HEALTH had seriously deteriorated.
