Potential enemies of the US president are looking for lawyers, packing duffel bags for a quick departure and instructing relatives. Organizers of the 2020 election, which Trump believes was stolen, are especially worried. Donald Trump

Across the United States, officials and others who have incurred the wrath of President Donald Trump for various reasons are taking precautions against retaliation, The Washington Post (WP) reports after speaking with more than two dozen people.

Interviewees described preparing for criminal investigations, tax audits, congressional or state legislative audits, arrests, online harassment, and threats. More than half hired lawyers, several packed duffel bags in case they had to leave quickly, and a couple carried newly acquired guns.

In addition, several people still in government positions are instructing employees on how to receive requests from authorities. About a dozen people have discussed with spouses or children what to do if police come to their home. Group chats are being organized, where officials offer condolences to each other and share contact information for lawyers.

As WP writes, the most likely targets are the officials who organized the 2020 presidential elections. Democrat Joe Biden won then , and Trump believes the results of that vote were stolen.

People from government officials at all levels to election equipment suppliers are worried, Tammy Patrick, chief program officer for the National Association of Election Officials, told the publication: “People are wondering if they have cash and valid passports if they go to another country, [which] country, how they’re going to make a living.”

The White House dismisses the concerns. “President Trump has repeatedly said his retaliation will be success, and he has already ended the weaponization of government with his recent executive orders,” said deputy press secretary Anna Kelly.

Trump himself also promised not to take revenge. "I'm not going to go back to the past," he said in December. At the same time, The New York Times notes that after his inauguration, the Republican stripped several officials who had received threats of government protection, including former US government adviser on covid-19 Anthony Fauci. In addition, the White House initiated a "special project" to investigate the activities of prosecutors who oversaw criminal cases on obstruction of justice against several defendants in the case of the storming of the Capitol building by Trump supporters in 2021.
