Vaccination protects against severe illness and death when infected with the Indian strain, the WHO said. In the coming months, this variant will become dominant unless a more competitive mutation appears.

Vaccination prevents severe covid-19 and death from the Indian delta strain of CORONAVIRUS, World HEALTH Organization (WHO) Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan said at a briefing. The event was broadcast on WHO Twitter.

“If you look at the statistics that really concern us, namely the severity of the disease, hospitalizations and deaths [from coronavirus], it is absolutely certain that vaccines prevent the increase in such cases. This is true for the delta option as well,” Swaminathan said.

In turn, WHO expert Maria van Kerkhove added that even in countries with a high level of vaccination, the Indian strain circulates in those communities in which there are fewer vaccinated people and where measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are not observed.

The proportion of those infected with the delta strain among all those infected in RUSSIA is almost 70%, Anna Popova, HEAD of Rospotrebnadzor, said in early August. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin attributed the spread of this variant to an increase in cases of reinfection with COVID-19. According to him, the Indian strain is more aggressive and penetrates the body faster and a higher level of immunity is needed to protect against it. In this regard, Moscow launched a revaccination program against coronavirus.
