KamAZ localizes the production of Chinese cars at the vacated capacities of the Renault Russia plant in Moscow. This was reported by the Vedomosti newspaper, citing two sources close to the company.

According to the newspaper, KamAZ is negotiating with the JAC automaker. At the same time, the Moscow authorities are negotiating with another Chinese automaker. Which one is not reported.

Production is scheduled to begin no later than the fourth quarter of 2022. A fundamental decision on the production model has not yet been made, the sources added.

RBC sent inquiries to a representative of the Moskvich plant, to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, as well as to the press service of the mayor and the government of Moscow.

On May 16, the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced the transfer of the Russian assets of the Renault group to state ownership. The share in AvtoVAZ went to the Central Research Automobile and Automotive Institute (NAMI), the Renault Russia plant went to the Moscow government. At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade indicated that an important condition of the agreement was an option for Renault to buy back its stake in AvtoVAZ, which can be exercised over the next six years.

After that, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced the resumption of production of Moskvich cars at the former Renault plant. “I have decided to take the plant to the balance of the city and resume the production of passenger cars under the historical Moskvich brand,” he said. The main technological partner of the revived Moscow automobile plant Moskvich will be KamAZ.

According to the deputy mayor of Moscow for transport Maxim Liksutov, the plant plans to produce cars that will be used for taxis and car sharing. According to him, for the Moscow taxi and carsharing market, 30,000 to 40,000 new cars need to be produced annually.
