Among the regions in the first place in terms of the daily number of infected is Moscow (6480), followed by St. Petersburg (3958) and the Moscow region (3147).

The total number of people infected since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the operations headquarters, has reached 10.8 million, the deaths - 321.3 thousand. At the same time, according to Rosstat, in 2021 alone, COVID-19 caused the death of 396.5 thousand people, and in 2020, 144 thousand Russians died from coronavirus. In November, the coronavirus became the main cause of death of more than 80 thousand Russians, the concomitant — in another 7.4 thousand people. In total, 625.9 thousand people with coronavirus have died in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

A day earlier, there were 27,179 infections and 723 deaths. The daily number of people infected on January 6 dropped to at least six months, but then began to grow again. This is due to the spread of the omicron variant, which is more contagious than previous strains.
