In St. Petersburg , 725 new cases of CORONAVIRUS infection ( covid-19 ) were registered over the past day. This is the highest number of new cases of "covid" in the city in April 2021, according to the federal operational headquarters for combating the pandemic.

The total number of citizens with a confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus has reached 415,740 people since the beginning of the epidemic. Of these, 374,736 have already recovered. The incidence of coronavirus again went up in St. Petersburg this week; last year, the number of daily registered cases of the disease did not exceed 700. The day before, on April 29, the interdepartmental city coordinating council for countering the pandemic recorded an increase in the registration of new cases of “covid” in medical organizations by 10.56% compared to last Thursday. The number of active patients with a new coronavirus infection has increased by 0.1% over the past 7 days.

In this regard, officials said that universal vaccination of the city's population is of decisive importance in preventing the third wave of the epidemic or in significantly weakening it. Recall that for the entire period in St. Petersburg, only 557,301 people were vaccinated. Of these, only 418,488 completed the vaccination cycle.

At the same time, Aleksey Yakovlev, HEAD of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology and Dermatovenereology at the Medical Faculty of St. Petersburg State University, told RBC Petersburg that although there is indeed a slight increase in the incidence, it is too early to talk about the third wave of covid. In his opinion, in reality, at least 2.4 million people have been ill with the coronavirus in the city since the beginning of the pandemic. “Summer is ahead, when, following the example of last year, we can expect a decrease in the incidence. By autumn, the situation is likely to become more complicated: many will end up with immunity from the disease they have had, and the chance of identifying new strains that can significantly increase the pandemic will also increase sharply, ”the expert noted.
