India launches test batch of Sputnik V vaccine

The Indian company Morepen Laboratories has produced a test batch of the Russian CORONAVIRUS vaccine Sputnik V, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said.

“The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF, the sovereign wealth fund of the Russian Federation) and Morepen Laboratories, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in India, announce the production of a test batch of the Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V at the company’s facilities,” the fund said. The drug was produced in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

Produced doses of the vaccine will be sent for quality control to the Center. N.F. Gamaleya, who developed the Sputnik V. RDIF and the Indian manufacturer agreed to cooperate in June, and are now engaged in "technological transfer", the fund said.

Earlier, RDIF signed contracts for the production of the vaccine with several Indian companies. So, in November 2020, the fund agreed to produce 100 million doses of Sputnik V with the leading Indian drug manufacturer Hetero. In March, an agreement was signed with the Indian companies Verchow Biotech Private Limited and Stelis Biopharma to produce 200 million vaccines per year.

Production of vaccines for mass circulation is scheduled to begin in August, Indian Ambassador to RUSSIA Bala Venkatesh Varma announced at the end of May. By September-October, the release of 850 million doses of the drug is expected. The Sputnik V vaccine was approved in India in April.
