NATO is strengthening the eastern flank and will create the necessary combat formations on it by the end of May, Inspector General of the Bundeswehr (Armed Forces of Germany) Eberhard Zorn said in an interview with the Welt newspaper.

“At the moment, we do not see any signs that would speak of an attack by Russian troops on NATO states. In this regard, we do have time to expand NATO's capabilities and strengthen the eastern flank. Around the end of May, we will create the necessary combat formations in all states from the Baltic to the Black Sea, ”said Zorn, answering the question of how much time the alliance needs in connection with the military operation in Ukraine to arm itself to curb Russia’s advance to the west.

He stressed that Germany and other countries of the alliance "under no circumstances" will "use their own forces on Ukrainian territory," as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden have previously stated .

According to Zorn, after the events of 2014 in Crimea, Germany reoriented its armed forces "to national and allied defense" and focused not on modernization, but on staffing troops. “A special fund in the amount of €100 billion will also be used for this,” the military said.
