Mikhail Meyer, president of the Institute of Asian and African Studies (ISAA) of Moscow State University, has died at the age of 86, according to the university's Telegram-calan.

Meyer was born on August 30, 1936 in Moscow. Graduated from the Institute of Oriental Languages (now - ISAA) at Moscow State University in 1960. In 1965 he became a candidate, in 1990 - a DOCTOR, and in 1992 - a professor of historical sciences. From 1994 to 2012 he was the director of the ISAA MSU, in 2012 he became the president of the institute.
The CCIS website says that with his participation, the Institute created the Department of History and Culture of Japan, the Department of Judaic Studies, the Department of Central Asia and the Caucasus, a number of educational and scientific centers in the countries of the East and West, and also established stable scientific ties between ISAA and foreign universities.
During his life, Meyer published over 150 scientific and educational works on the socio-political, economic, cultural history of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey and other countries of the Near and Middle East.
In 2005, the professor was awarded the Order of Friendship, and in 2010 - the Order of the Rising Sun (Japan).
