A branch of the British government bought ads on Russian social networks, including Vkontakte, to combat "Russian disinformation" about the situation in Ukraine, reports The Telegraph.
We are talking about the Center for Government Information (Government Information Cell, GIC), the creation of which was announced by British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in February. Among the tasks of the structure, the minister named work to ensure that Moscow "does not make statements that do not correspond to the truth."
According to the Telegraph, the division is responsible for identifying false information among information materials that are distributed, including online.
In addition, it follows from the article, the tasks of the GIC include promoting among Russians the UK's position on what is happening in Ukraine. In particular, it was responsible for distributing a video message from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the Russians shortly after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
As a rule, the newspaper writes, the British authorities instruct to place such videos on official government accounts on Twitter, FACEBOOK and Instagram. However, these social networks are blocked in RUSSIA, in addition, the article says, in London they understand that “ordinary Russians” would hardly watch these messages and attach importance to them.
