In 2020, in March of which the pandemic began, 163.3 thousand people infected with coronavirus died in Russia, for 144.7 thousand of them the infection became the main cause of death. The total number of deaths with coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic (as the main or concomitant cause) amounted to 681.1 thousand people.

The total number of deaths in Russia from various causes of death in January-December 2021 amounted to 2.4 million people, which is 15% more than in 2020. Excluding deaths from coronavirus, mortality in Russia in 2021 decreased by 1.02%, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova told reporters. She noted that in 2021, mortality due to diseases of the circulatory system decreased by 1%, due to neoplasms - by 3.7%, due to the human immunodeficiency virus - by 8.5%, due to tuberculosis - by 8 .9%, due to diseases of the endocrine system, eating disorders and metabolic disorders - by 14.6%, TASS reported.

In 2021, the main peak of mortality occurred in the autumn months - October and November. Then two records were consistently set for the number of deaths per month - 75.5 thousand people and 81.1 thousand people. These figures exceeded the previous summer peak by more than 1.5 times. In December, the death rate began to decline: this month, 54.6 thousand people died with coronavirus, of which 49.1 thousand of them became the main cause of death, Rosstat said today.
