The number of deaths from coronavirus infection during the pandemic amounted to 6.9 million people, follows from data from the World Health Organization (WHO). They take into account the official data of the countries. At the same time, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus said that the real number of victims is higher: according to him, 20 million people died from COVID-19.

The most massive influenza pandemic in history was the Spanish flu, which lasted from 1918 to 1920. The total number of deaths from the "Spanish flu" according to various studies ranged from 17.4 million to 100 million people. The Spanish flu pandemic began in 1918, and massive troop movements from World War I countries accelerated the spread of the flu. The place where the pandemic began has not been unequivocally established. The Spanish flu surpassed the First World War in terms of the number of victims: combat losses in the war amounted to about 10 million people. The scale of the disaster complicated the post-war years and the lower level of medicine.

The next influenza pandemics were much less massive in terms of the number of victims, and to some extent they can be correlated with each other. The last before COVID-19 was the swine flu pandemic in 2009. The number of deaths from coronavirus exceeded the number of deaths from swine flu: then the flu caused death from 0.13-0.18 million people to 0.20-1.87 million people (various estimates by researchers).

Swine flu was discovered in March 2009 in Mexico, the United States and CANADA, where the first fatal cases were reported. In May, the first cases of infection were detected in RUSSIA. In June of that year, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic. WHO announced its completion in August 2010.

The countries most affected by COVID-19 in terms of the absolute number of deaths were the United States, Brazil and India, where 1.1 million people died from the coronavirus, 0.7 million and 0.5 million residents, respectively.

In Russia, according to the operational headquarters, 398,000 people infected with COVID-19 have died since the beginning of the pandemic. Rosstat stopped publishing data on deaths due to coronavirus in the fall of 2022. By that time, according to the statistical service, 823.7 thousand people with coronavirus had died in the country. Rosstat also took into account cases where COVID-19 was not the main cause of death.

The list of states with the most deaths from COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants looks different. Peru, which is in seventh place in terms of the total number of deaths from coronavirus, has become the leading country per 100,000 people.

WHO Director- General Tedros Ghebreyesus announced the end of the global emergency for COVID-19 on May 5, 2023. He explained that for more than one year, “the pandemic has been on a downward trend, population immunity is rising due to vaccination and infection, mortality is decreasing and the pressure on health systems is easing.” The WHO declared the coronavirus pandemic on March 11, 2020. Two weeks earlier, two weeks later, the disease was detected in 114 countries, and the number of infected people in the world exceeded 118 thousand people.

At the end of January 2020, the first cases of coronavirus infection were detected in Russia. By March 11, 28 cases of coronavirus infection had already been recorded, 15 of them were in the capital. To prevent the spread of the virus, Russia limited air traffic with Italy, Germany, France and Spain, where outbreaks of the infection were observed, and on March 27 completely stopped air traffic with other countries.

In order to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, from March 30 to May 11, 2020, a non-working day regime was in effect in Russia. In Moscow, from the end of March to June, a self-isolation regime was in effect, passes for moving around the city on public and personal transport became mandatory from April 15.

On January 18, 2021, mass vaccination of all Russians against coronavirus started. In July 2022, all restrictions imposed due to the spread of the coronavirus ceased to operate in Russia.
