A new strain of the omicron CORONAVIRUS is probably already in RUSSIA, said Senator and Honored DOCTOR of Russia Vladimir Krugly, RIA Novosti reports. However, Rospotrebnadzor reported that they had not yet identified cases of infection with this strain.

“The omicron strain is most likely already present in Russia. The source of its distribution is our people who visited Egypt,” Krugly said.

He added that Russian tourists returning from Egypt could be the source of the spread of the new strain. The senator called for "medical surveillance" for them. At the same time, the official representative of the Egyptian Ministry of HEALTH of the country, Husam Abdel Ghaffar, told TASS that not a single case of infection with a new strain has yet been detected in the country.

The HEAD of the scientific group for the development of new diagnostic methods based on sequencing technologies of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Kamil Khafizov, announced that by November 28, the omicron strain had not been detected in Russia, although active work is underway on sequencing the covid-19 genomes (the process of establishing the DNA sequence), including from patients who have recently visited foreign countries.
