The German media regulator has launched an investigation into the RT channel on suspicion of violating broadcasting rules in Germany. This was reported by the DPA agency with reference to the DIRECTOR of the Berlin-Brandenburg media agency Eva Flecken.
The agency believes that RT launched an online program in German without a license to broadcast in Germany.
“In this regard, we have launched an official investigation,” Flekken told the agency, pointing out that the organizers of the program have until the end of the year to “comment on the situation.”
The DPA noted that an attempt to obtain a license to broadcast in German in Luxembourg was not successful. However, the agency emphasizes that thanks to the license obtained in Serbia, broadcasting is carried out in 33 European countries. However, to broadcast in Germany, TV channels must have a German license. RT DE, in turn, refers to the European Convention on Transfrontier Television, on the basis of which, according to the channel, broadcasting in Germany is possible thanks to a Serbian license.
According to DPA, following the investigation, a decision may be made to ban broadcasting, and a fine of up to €500,000 is also possible. The TV channel can appeal this decision, the agency adds.
