S7 Airlines was among the 20 air carriers certified in RUSSIA that fell under the EU ban on flights. In addition to S7, Pobeda, Aurora, Yakutia, Ural Airlines, Alrosa, Yamal, NordStar, Aeroflot were blacklisted.
“The European Commission has updated the list of airlines that are banned or restricted from operating in the European Union because they do not meet international safety requirements. Now this list includes 21 airlines certified in Russia, ”the document quotes RBC.
Previously, the blacklist included only one Russian airline, Skol, which was included in it in November 2021.
European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean explained the expansion of the black list for Russian air carriers by the fact that the Federal Air Transport Agency allowed airlines to use aircraft owned abroad without proper certification.
“These Russian airlines deliberately went for it in violation of international safety standards. <...> However, I want to make it clear that this decision is not yet another sanction against Russia; it was adopted solely on the basis of technical and safety considerations. We do not mix security with politics,” said Valean.
At the end of February, after the start of the special operation of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine, the EU countries imposed a ban on the sale of aircraft and spare parts to Russia, as well as the EXPORT of technologies in the aviation and space industries. Insurance and maintenance in these industries is also not allowed.
In mid-March, the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority withdrew airworthiness certificates for aircraft used by airlines from Russia. By February 24, 768 aircraft of Russian air carriers were registered in Bermuda.
