The US Department of Energy has concluded that the global covid-19 pandemic was caused by a leak from a Chinese laboratory, writes The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the contents of a secret intelligence report.
The version that the CORONAVIRUS began to spread after a leak from the laboratory has been expressed in Washington for the first time. In June 2021, the WSJ wrote that it was proposed to be considered as "plausible" by the national laboratory of the US government. However, already in August of the same year, as The New York Times reported, the country's intelligence expressed doubts about the correctness of this theory. Then it was stated that the virus most likely appeared naturally when a person came into contact with an infected animal.
The version about the laboratory origin of COVID-19 was supported only by the FBI, the WSJ notes, but now the Ministry of Energy is of the same opinion. The FBI's "moderate confidence" in the 2021 leak theory was reported by CNN sources. The Ministry of Energy, according to the WSJ, is considering this version with a "low degree of certainty." Four more intelligence agencies support the natural theory of the origin of the virus, two have not decided, the newspaper specifies.
The US Department of Energy allowed the start of a COVID pandemic due to a laboratory leak Society
In October 2021, US intelligence released a full declassified report on the study of the origin of the coronavirus. According to him, the Intelligence Society (IC) dismissed the version that CHINA was developing SARS-CoV-2 as a biological weapon. In addition, the IC was unable to refute or confirm the evidence that the virus was the result of genetic engineering, as there is not enough data to do so.
Speaking about the version of the leak from the laboratory, IC indicates that if it did take place, then in China at first they did not know about it. The Wuhan Institute of Virology, which studied SARS-CoV-2, began research after the outbreak, the report said, and was previously unaware of the existence of the virus. However, the laboratory was conducting research on other coronaviruses, and the biosecurity conditions were "inadequate", which could lead to an incident in the laboratory, such as infection of employees.
The report said that "more transparency and cooperation from Beijing" would be needed to determine the exact causes of the pandemic.

The second phase of the verification, during which they were supposed to consider in detail the version of a laboratory leak, stalled due to China's refusal to cooperate with the experts of the organization. At the same time, after the first stage of the investigation, WHO called the possibility of leakage of the virus from the laboratory minimal.
