The leadership of Ukraine is gradually beginning to more adequately assess the situation, and the influence of “sensible” people from the alliance with whom Zelensky negotiated is also affecting, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov believes

The change in the rhetoric of President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said that Kyiv understands that the country is not expected to join NATO, is due to the fact that now the country's leadership more adequately assesses the situation. Lavrov said this in an interview with RBC TV channel.

“The change in rhetoric is probably due to the fact that this very adequacy is making its way into the minds of the Ukrainian leadership,” Lavrov said, answering a question about what Zelensky’s corresponding statement is connected with.

At the same time, according to him, Moscow has not forgotten how Zelensky called for closing the sky over Ukraine and sending mercenaries to fight for Kyiv, Lavrov noted. “But, apparently, the reaction of the allies, among whom there are still sane people, cooled this ardor,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov also recalled that in the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine (Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine), which was adopted before the creation of the CIS, “it is written in black and white” that it will be a non-bloc, military-neutral state. This document formed the basis of the statehood of Ukraine and is indicated as basic in many fundamental documents adopted later.
