CANADA has added Volga-Dnepr Airlines (Ireland) Limited and Volga-Dnepr Logistics BV, which are part of the Volga-Dnepr cargo airline group, to the sanctions list, the Canadian government’s website reports.
The company's website states that the Irish legal entity was created to provide technical support for An-124-100 aircraft.
RBC sent a request to the Volga-Dnepr press service.
Volga-Dnepr itself has been under Canadian restrictions since April 2023. Ottawa explained this decision by the airline's involvement in the military operation in Ukraine and the provision of services to the Wagner PMC.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that Volga-Dnepr filed a lawsuit demanding that the restrictions be recognized as erroneous, since it was not involved in the military operation and did not provide services to the PMC.
Another COURT case between the company and Ottawa concerns the seizure in Canada of an An-124-100 belonging to Volga-Dnepr. The aircraft was carrying covid tests from CHINA to Canada on February 27, 2022, but was detained at Toronto airport due to the government’s decision to close the skies to air carriers from RUSSIA. In the summer of 2023, the plane was seized after sanctions were imposed on the company.
At the same time, the Canadian authorities promised to hand over the An-124 to Ukraine. Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov said that the Russian side regards the confiscation of the An-124 as "piracy, illegal seizure."
