US President Joe Biden should reconsider his policy towards Iran, otherwise there is a possibility of a new conflict with Tehran, former NATO Secretary General Javier Solana and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt said in the latter's article for the Washington Post.
In their opinion, Biden and European leaders need to act "quickly and decisively", as they did in the situation with Ukraine, in order to return the nuclear deal "to the right track."
"Biden must seriously weigh the costs of his passivity towards Iran and find a way forward - or we may find ourselves in another conflict," the politicians say.
In 2015, Iran, the United States, RUSSIA , France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and CHINA signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The states participating in the deal agreed not to impose sanctions against Tehran in exchange for its refusal to develop nuclear weapons, limit the degree of uranium enrichment and access of IAEA inspectors to Iran's nuclear facilities.
In 2018, when Donald Trump was President of the United States , Washington pulled out of the deal, citing Tehran's violation of the agreements. Iran responded by enriching uranium above the permitted level.
Iranian parliament put forward conditions for the resumption of the nuclear deal Politics
After becoming President of the United States, Joe Biden in the fall of 2021 announced his readiness to return to compliance with the nuclear deal if Iran takes similar steps. Negotiations resumed in Austria in December. On February 5, the United States announced a decision to reinstate previously lifted sanctions exemptions on Iran's nuclear program.
On March 15, State Department spokesman Ned Price said the talks were close to the finish line, but some difficult issues remained unresolved. He stressed that the new sanctions against Russia are not related to the JCPOA and should not affect the achievement of an agreement.
