The "fever of unknown origin" has become the biggest shock North Korea has faced since the founding of the country, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said at a meeting of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reports.

“The spread of this dangerous infectious disease in our country is the biggest shock since the founding of the country, as well as the very serious situation with the spread of the new CORONAVIRUS around the world,” Kim Jong-un said.

According to the data of the National Emergency Administration on the spread of the DPRK epidemic, as of May 13, 174,440 new cases of "fever" were detected in the country, 21 people with this diagnosis died, another 81,430 residents recovered. From the end of April to May 13, the total number of cases in the country amounted to 524,440 people, of which 234,630 have fully recovered, 288,810 are being treated, and the number of deaths is currently 27.

The leader of the DPRK pointed out that this crisis is connected, among other things, with the “incompetence and irresponsibility” of party organizations in ensuring quarantine. He said that the DPRK will be able to overcome the crisis if it focuses on the implementation of anti-virus measures.

In SOUTH KOREA, they announced a serious situation with covid-19 in the DPRK Society

On May 13, the South Korean agency Yonhap reported an outbreak of fever in the DPRK. According to the agency, it has affected 350,000 people, of which 162,000 have already been treated. At the same time, it was not specified whether the outbreak was related to coronavirus infection.

The first case of coronavirus infection in North Korea was reported on May 12. Then Yonhap wrote that tests were taken from patients on May 8, the results showed infection with the COVID-19 omicron strain. Then the authorities of the republic announced the launch of a virus control system under conditions of a “maximum emergency”. Kim Jong-un during a meeting of the Politburo urged to stop all ways for the spread of infection and strengthen border controls.

Following the meeting, the DPRK Politburo instructed to work out quarantine measures and strictly control their implementation. The South Korean authorities then announced their readiness to transfer humanitarian aid to Pyongyang to fight the coronavirus.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, North Korea has never officially reported cases of coronavirus infection in the country. In July 2020, the authorities announced a suspected illness in one person who could have illegally crossed the border. Kim Jong-un called an emergency meeting of the Politburo. All those who came into contact with the likely case were placed in quarantine.

In order to prevent the penetration of the coronavirus, the DPRK authorities in January 2020 closed land, sea and air borders for citizens and foreigners, and also introduced severe restrictions on movement within the DPRK. Then, in February of the same year, the country suspended rail links with RUSSIA, the embassies of other states began to close, and diplomats began to leave the country.

In addition, official Pyongyang refused to participate in the Tokyo Summer Olympics last year due to the situation with the coronavirus.
