Clinical trials of the updated covid-19 vaccine “Sputnik Light” have been completed, and already in the first ten days of December it can go into civilian circulation. This was announced by the HEAD of the Center. Gamaleya (developer of Sputnik V) Alexander Ginzburg in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
“If everything goes as we agreed with the Ministry of HEALTH in terms of permitting issues, then, indeed, in the first ten days (December 10–15) Sputnik Light will be in civilian circulation,” he said.
The remaining vaccine options, including Sputnik V and the children's version, will arrive at medical institutions later.
To speed up the process, the Ministry of Health allowed the center to simultaneously increase the required volume of vaccines and write a report on the results of clinical trials, Gunzburg added. According to him, this will allow the vaccine batches (checked according to the department’s documentation) to be put into civilian circulation at the time of registration of the drug and not have to wait another two months.
The head of the Gamaleya center explained that after the virus changed antigenically, a change in the vaccine was also required. The lethality of the CORONAVIRUS has decreased, but at the same time its infectiousness has increased, he noted.
At the end of October, Ginzburg said that Sputnik V had ceased to protect against new strains of COVID-19. Since mid-summer 2022, when coronavirus variants Omicron 1, 2 and 3 emerged, vaccine effectiveness has dropped eightfold. When options 4 and 5 appeared, the efficiency dropped by 20 times. The drug is completely powerless against new variants.
