The Milner Foundation pledged to donate $100 million to refugees from Ukraine

The foundation of businessman Yuri Milner and his wife Yulia Breakthrough Prize will donate $100 million to refugees from Ukraine, according to a report published by the PR Newswire portal. 

The Foundation partnered with a number of major tech companies, including Airbnb, Flexport and Spotify, to launch the Tech For Refugees initiative to help provide humanitarian assistance to refugees around the world.

“The initial contribution from the Breakthrough Prize fund is $100 million. Most of the funds will be directed to support civilians leaving Ukraine. This will be the first step before extending the initiative to other regions,” the statement said.

The partner companies of the initiative "use their experience and networks" to help refugees. In particular, Airbnb will provide short-term free housing to up to 100,000 refugees from Ukraine, Flexport.org, a division of the digital forwarding company Flexport, will help organize the delivery of hospital beds, emergency medical equipment and other supplies for refugees. The report says that the company has already sent two planes to help Ukrainians.

“Tech For Refugees aims to both support existing humanitarian programs and fund new ones that provide the refugee assistance they desperately need. The initiative is open to new partners in the technology sector and fresh ideas.

FORBES notes that Milner's international venture fund DST Global and the Breakthrough Foundation have previously donated $5.5 million to the Stand With Ukraine project of actors Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. The Breakthrough Foundation also promised to allocate $3 million to support victims in Ukraine and another $3 million to organizations that provide assistance to scientists who left this country.

The publication quotes Milner's words from a conversation with Forbes usa . the entrepreneur said that the Tech for Refugees initiative is important to him because of his personal ties with Ukraine.

“My paternal family is Ukrainian, and as a child I spent many years there with my cousins. Our duty now is to respond to the urgent needs of refugees by directing our connections and resources to this humanitarian disaster,” Milner said.
