Russian tennis players performed poorly at the tournament in Monte Carlo due to weather conditions and unusual clay coverage. Andrey Olkhovsky, the winner of the Roland Garos and Australian Open tournaments, shared this opinion in a conversation with RBC Sport.
“Nothing terrible happened. Our tennis players could have performed better, we hoped that it would be better. Of course, the tournament was important for us, it is one of the ten largest tennis events, points go into the overall rating for it. The first big clay tournament, difficult weather conditions, it was very windy. Who better adapted, the better and plays. There will still be tournaments ahead where you can recoup,” Olkhovsky said.
Rublev was the last Russian to leave the Tennis Masters in Monte Carlo Football
Olkhovsky also believes that another reason for the poor performance of tennis players was psychology.
“Our tennis players clearly lacked psychological confidence. When you win at least two matches, the tournament unfolds for you in a completely different direction. Here the difference at this level is one or two points in one direction or the other, and the match has already unfolded. As was yesterday with Rublev. As soon as Sinner returned to the game, there was already another person on the COURT from Andrey, and he starts playing not so confidently. This is an indicator that everything can change during the match, ”added Olkhovsky.
Andrey Rublev lost in the third round and left the Monte Carlo tournament as the last of the Russian tennis players. Two other representatives of RUSSIA - Karen Khachanov and Aslan Karatsev - could not overcome the barrier of the first round.
The best Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev missed the tournament in Monte Carlo due to surgery. He also withdrew from the next two clay Masters in Madrid and Rome, which will be held from 1 to 8 and 8 to 15 May respectively.
