British media regulator Ofcom has revoked the license to broadcast in the UK from the Russian TV channel RT, according to its website.
“The decision takes effect immediately. We accepted it on the basis that we do not consider the recipient of the RT license, ANO TV-Novosti, to be suitable for holding a broadcasting license in the UK,” the regulator said.
As noted by Ofcom, the channel no longer broadcasts in the United Kingdom as a result of sanctions imposed after the start of the military operation in Ukraine.
Ofcom pointed out that 29 investigations had previously opened against the broadcaster in Britain related to demands for impartiality in reporting on the situation in Ukraine, and the serious nature of the issues raised in a short period was a matter of concern. Therefore, the regulator launched another investigation into the ability of the RT legal entity to retain the broadcast license, which took into account factors such as state funding for RT, as well as new laws adopted in RUSSIA.
“We have come to the conclusion that we cannot be sure that RT can be a responsible broadcaster in the current circumstances,” the regulator concluded.
